Working on New Things: Right Brain Business Plan

Ok, I messed up and didn’t blog last week because I was a bit overwhelmed trying to complete some projects. I also didn’t really feel like shooting anything so I just said to myself “Meh, I will blog next week”. Since I am working on a new website and stuff, my blogging rules will most likely change. I want to blog more personal/thoughts/ideas/inspiration for shoots and some behind the scenes stuff. I also really want to blog some video but I am kind of ashamed at the terrible quality of videos from my video camera (she’s 5 years old and still kickin!). I guess I just keep making excused as to why I can’t video blog which is lame-o! Anyways, this week I write to you about some business stuff. It is January 20th! 20 days into 2013 and I wonder what resolutions folks are still sticking to and which ones they’ve ditched (feel free to comment below ;) ). Anyways. My biggest resolution is just to look at the resolutions I wrote out for myself and my business (I printed them out and taped them to the wall in my office). I figure the more I look at them the more likely things will get done vs. having my list saved on my computer which I know will end up buried in the depths of files I have on here. Some of the resolutions that I have for myself are to really get better at some of the back end stuff like writing a business plan, marketing, creating a newsletter, budgets, etc. Writing a business plan just sounds so dreadful and boring to me. I started last year and then just got lost in the process. It felt like writing a boring paper on something I wasn’t sure I understood. (“What?? Hold Up!” I am sure you are thinking… “How can you not understand your own business and dread writing about it?”). Let’s just put it this way… if my business plan could be a collection of photographs explaining my business then it would be… waaaait a moment… It can be! Enter the Right Brain Business Plan workshop. It is funny how the Universe works. As some of you may know from Facebook I love CreativeLIVE because it has become my continuing education source. They have so many wonderful classes that are FREE during the live airing and then you can chose to purchase them so that you can watch them at your convenience over and over. They are super affordable and so worth it. Anyways, pitch over on them. I saw that there was a course called “The Right Brain Business Plan” coming to CreativeLIVE and it resonated with me. I was like “Whaat? RIGHT BRAIN(?) business plan? For Realz?!” It was so exciting! I did some Googling on this said Right Brain Business Plan and encountered wonderful creative images that spoke to me. It was wonderful so I decided to purchase the book and sign up for the class. Well, the class aired this weekend and let me tell you… WOW INTENSE. I mean wow. So much good information in 3 days! The good thing though, is that the class follows the book which is wonderful! I started reading the book yesterday and its pretty darn awesome. I started gathering my cutouts and ideas for my business plan collage. So much inspiration has surfaced in the past two days. I am a big fan of visualization boards, artsy stuff and the law of attraction so this is up my ally. I highly recommend this workshop and books to my creative colleagues and to my left-brain dominant colleagues because a lot of our creative side gets lost in the business part of the business. We are so busy getting stuff done that we set aside creative outlets for doing things or we just don’t give ourselves permission to “be creative” with our thinking. Business planning doesn’t have to be linear. Any who, here are some behind the scenes images from the process <3 Happy Sunday!

2012: You’ve been soooo good to me! Holla! A year in review :D

The “year in review” post didn’t even come onto my radar until I started seeing a few “end of year” posts pop up on my Google Reader. I debated… meh I don’t think I want to do one… but in reality I DO! This year was FREAKING INCREDIBLE! I met...more

The “year in review” post didn’t even come onto my radar until I started seeing a few “end of year” posts pop up on my Google Reader. I debated… meh I don’t think I want to do one… but in reality I DO! This year was FREAKING INCREDIBLE! I met incredible people, photographed incredible people and just plain ol’ lived it up! Last year I claimed to the world that I wanted to meet Jasmine Star and I did in March! It was such an incredible moment because I got to network with such amazing and talented artists from the area :) . So Universe! This year I want to meet Sue Bryce (and Tiesto!!)! ;) This year has, of course, not come without changes and growth. It was a year of self-discovery and personal growth. It was a year of finding where I fit in the photo world, it was a year of discovering “what’s my thing?”. So, What is my thing you ask? Portraits! I have found my home in taking Glamor Portraits of women (as you will see in the very end of this blog post). This has come because I discovered Sue Bryce and she, as well as her work, have been such an inspiration. When I discovered her workshop on Creative Live this summer my world literally flipped upside down (in a good way). She was the change I was so eagerly wanting. Normally, when I see something that I really want to try, I really make an effort to try it. But this, this was a whole new feeling. It was a feeling that this was something I was meant to do. So, I am finding my way in the Glam. Portrait world. With that being said, lots of changes are coming to Anna D Bruce Photography. For example… 2013 is going to be my last year shooting weddings. Period. A new website is coming and my new logo is currently in the works. I will be offering some new products and a whole new level of awesomeness :) As the year progressed, Adam and I got to go to England. It was our first time there and it was such an incredible trip (I still haven’t finished blogging about it lol). My best friend then got married and I got to be a bridesmaid! It was so weird to be part of the wedding like that and not be the “official” photographer lol! Then the editing frenzy happened because Christmas somehow snuck up on me and I wanted to have things done before “calling it quits” for 2012. Unfortunately, 2012 took away an incredible person, Sean. Sean was a friend and client of mine. I was able to meet his mom who is an incredible person and so strong. My love is with you always Donna. So, 2013 what do you have in store for me? I am so excited for you. 2012, thank you for the incredible opportunities you have given me. Thank you for allowing me to once again shoot alongside the amazing Liz Maryann Photography and Heather Bee Photography as well as letting me shoot for the first (and several times there after) along the incredible Evelyn Alas Photography. Thank you for bringing into my life the amazing Alison Harper & Co so that her team can glam up my clients. Thank you to my hubby, family, babies (Leela and Stealth) and friends for your love and support. Happy New Year!!! xoxo always! Anna :) 2011 closed and 2012 started with an incredible trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (the place where Adam and I tied the knot). I love being a part of the DC photography community. I know we are all in the business to stay in business and many business folks would not encourage hanging out and bonding with the “competition” but most of us tend to disagree. I have learned so much from hanging out and networking with other photographers and I have also gotten the opportunity to assist other wonderful photographers in the area by being part of a several photo groups. I can’t express enough how grateful I am to the community for their love and support :) Last night, Leigh Ann and I got to go to DC for the DC Smug monthly meeting which was “All About Lights”. 3 amazing photographers from the area (Erum Rizvi, Moshe Zusman and Procopio Photography) taught us some of their lighting techniques for weddings and portraits.  We then had the opportunity to break out into groups and take photos using that photographer’s technique and guidance on models! How exciting! I am including some photos below from the breakout group with Erum Rizvi. I learned a lot about using video lights in your portraits. It was so wonderful. I also got to watch the Procopio Photography workshop but didn’t get to take any photos. Thank you again to DC Smug, the two lovely group coordinators: Julie Renee and Kristi Odom as well as Erum Rizvi, Moshe Zusman and Procopio Photography!   Enjoy<3 Makeup by: Behind the Veil
